The Vision Behind Rocca a Mare: Heraklion's New Hotel
Trésor Hospitality is proud to announce its latest endeavor, the Rocca a Mare, a new hotel located in the heart of Heraklion, Crete, this exceptional property is part of Accor’s Handwritten Collection, a brand renowned for its curated, boutique-style hotels with character and individuality.
A Name Rooted in History
The name “Rocca a Mare” is deeply intertwined with the storied past of Heraklion. Dating back to the Venetian era (13th–17th century), the name originates from the iconic Koules Fortress, one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks. Built to protect Heraklion’s bustling harbor—then known as Candia—from pirate raids and external threats, the Venetians aptly named this stronghold “Rocca a Mare”, meaning “Fortress by the Sea” in Italian.
The fortress served as a maritime sentinel, standing resilient against the waters of the Cretan Sea and safeguarding the city. Symbolizing strength, protection, and a deep connection to the sea, the name Rocca a Mare evokes Crete’s timeless maritime heritage, bridging the island’s past with its vibrant present. For guests, it brings to mind Crete’s storied history, its coastal beauty, and its enduring spirit, offering a unique and immersive experience that celebrates both luxury and tradition.
The Inspiration Behind the Logo
Drawing on Crete’s ancient roots, the Rocca a Mare logo pays homage to the island’s rich cultural legacy. Inspired by Linear A, the writing system used by the Minoan civilization between 1800 BC and 1450 BC, the design reflects simplicity, elegance, and historical significance. Linear A, often found in palace and religious texts of the Minoans, stands as a symbol of Crete’s advanced and artistic society.
The logo features a minimalist monogram that strikes a balance between modern aesthetics and ancient influences. Its clean lines and contemporary form convey a sense of timelessness, while the blue tones evoke the sea. The result is a logo that seamlessly blends modernity with history, subtly honoring the island's lasting cultural significance.
